The historical backdrop of Jamia Hamdard starts with the foundation of a little Unani facility in the year 1906 by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed, one of the outstanding specialists of Unani System of Medicine of his time. Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed had a dream of making the act of Unani Medicine into a logical order so that Unani prescriptions could be apportioned in a progressively effectual way to patients. He gave the name "Hamdard" to his endeavor which signifies "compassion toward all and sharing of torment". His distinguished child, Hakeem Abdul Hameed, conveyed forward the way of thinking and targets of Hamdard in free India.
