From the academic year 2010 South Asian University started its operations. In various disciplines university now offers post-graduate and doctoral programmes that include Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Biotechnology, Sociology, International Relations and Law. SAU's degrees are recognized by all the eight SAARC countries and it attracts students from all member nations. It is an international university established by the eight member nations of SAARC viz. Bhutan, India, Maldives,Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. University has a faculty of undergraduate studies and 11 post-graduate faculties.
University has a campus in 100 acre campus in Maidan Garhi, South Delhi where construction is under way till now it is currently functioning from Akbar Bhawan Campus in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. By the year 2016-17 university expects to shift to its own residential campus. Degrees and certificates are recognized by the University Grants Commission in India and by other SAARC countries which are awarded by the South Asian University. On research and post-graduate level programmes University will focus overwhelmingly. Tuition fees for the students is heavily subsidized. On full cost recovery basis some students from non-SAARC countries may also be admitted.
