Nalanda University was establsihed with an idea given by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, while addressing the Bihar State Legislative Assembly, in March 2006. A proposal by Singapore was forwarded to India which contains re-establishment of a University like Nalanda. State Government of Bihar consulted the Government of India on the way ahead after adopting the visionary idea. A 450 acres of land in Rajgir¸ Bihar was dentified and acquired for a suitable location for the new Nalanda University. Former President of India mooted the idea of reviving the university after eight hundred years after the destruction of Nalanda. In January 2007 proposal was first shared with EAS at the Cebu Summit in Philippines. This purposal was welcomed by the Member States. Government of India decided to share this proposal with the leaders of the East Asia Summit due to internationalism hallmark of the ancient Nalanda. By a high degree of co-operation between the State of Bihar and the Government of India make possible the formation of this university.
