Understanding the loss of two many years of prime advancement in the development of creature farming, dairy and fisheries under Agricultural Universities set up, the Government of Karnataka made striking strides in setting up the new University called Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University on the floor of the Legislative Assembly. The KVAFSU was shaped according to the Karnataka Act No. 9 of 2004 called The Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries University Act 2004 and distributed in the Karnataka Gazette Extra-Ordinary on the 23rd day of February, 2004. The University was set up solely for the advancement of instruction and learning; direct of research and expansion training and move the country situated advances in the zones of Veterinary, Animal, Dairy and Fisheries Sciences in Karnataka. The logo of the University is engraved with the trademark Farmers Friendly and Rural Oriented, which stresses the significance given to improvement of cultivating network. Prof. R.N. Sreenivas Gowda was selected as its first Vice-Chancellor and presented with impact from September, 2004 until February ninth, 2008. Later Prof. G.S. Bhat and Dr.S.Mallikarjunappa filled in as Acting Vice-Chancellors for a short period from February tenth, 2008 to July 24, 2008. Prof Suresh Honnappagol was filled in as second Vice Chancellor of the University. Dr. C. Renukaprasad has been delegated as third Vice-Chancellor of the University from 21st September, 2012.
KVAFSU is an independent scholarly foundation represented by its Board of Management which directs the polices of the college as per the arrangement of act and statues.
