Cherrapunjee or privately called 'Sohra', the wettest spot earth, has been the motivation for the name. These undulating green covered slopes were nostalgically called by the British as the "Scotland of the East".
Preceding 1982, there was no school in the Sohra Civil Sub-Division which is an instructively in reverse region. Arranged 52 KM from Shillong, the State Capital, Sohra Civil Sub-Division is a fringe territory with Bangladesh. Since guardians living in the territory where every now and then denied of the chance to get their children and little girls conceded in universities in Shillong because of money related requirements, a plan to set up a school at Sohra jumped up in the psyche of the Teacher-Educators, youth and unmistakable residents of the region.
Targeting satisfying the long desires of the individuals and understudies network of Sohra Civil Sub-Division and its encompassing zones, Sohra College was built up by the individuals themselves in 1982. In the primary board for the foundation of Sohra College hung on 18.06.1982, individuals speaking to from various zones of the subdivision consistently set out to open the school with impact from the scholastic session of 1982-83.
Sohra College began when it didn't have anything of its own neither land nor building. Classes were led at Cherra Presbyterian High School with the consent from the overseeing advisory group of the school and furthermore to use in any event three study halls at night hours from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM for a time of 1982-87. According to the choice of the Governing Body meeting hung on 2-10-1987 to have a Day-Shift/Day segment of the school, classes were directed on a leased house at Rs.250/ - month and the College obliged there till moved to Hostel of Government Normal Training School, Cherrapunjee on May, 1988. In 1989 the school was designated a plot of land estimating 8330.7 Square Meter by the Executive Committee of the Dorbar of Sirdar Elaka Saitsohpen, Cherrapunjee. The development of structure was begun throughout the winter of 1989 and finished till late 1990. In spite of the fact that classes in this grounds began in 1991 yet development for expansion of the structure so that there will be arrangement for staff regular room, understudy basic room, library perusing room and so on were proceeded. It was after the provincialisation of the school on 19-01-2009 that the Government of Meghalaya considered this current grounds as brief grounds and correspondingly a plot of land estimating 15.56 sections of land was apportioned by the Disaster and Revenue Department, Government of Meghalaya on 26-May-2015. From 2009 onwards the Government had halted the expansion and redesign of the school with the intension of moving to the lasting grounds (15.56 sections of land) yet till now no indication of development. In this manner with the current framework the school face the issue of conceding understudies even from its own territory.
Sohra Government College has a qualification of being the main degree school in the entire Sohra Civil Sub-Division which includes a populace of more than 1.5 lakh. In that capacity its area is of key significant for the instruction of the young in this district at degree level particularly Science and Commerce streams.
