The Center was set up on first of April 1983 with the order to lead biomedical research on transmittable and non-transferable illnesses common in Andaman and Nicobar Islands with extraordinary accentuation on the medical issues of the indigenous clans and to create specialized labor locally. A field station of the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED), Kolkata was working at Port Blair until 1983, when it was converged with the RMRC. The Center began working in a leased structure in Farzand Ali Market at Aberdeen Bazar, Port Blair. The Center around then had least lab offices for clinical research.
