Tirunelveli Government Law College was established in 1996 to cater to the needs of the people of southern Tamilnadu. It is affiliated with Ambedkar Law University, Tamil Nadu. Initially, the university prepared students only for three-year law courses (regular). Prof. A. Chandrasekaran, M.L. has been appointed Special Representative for finalizing the institutional arrangements for establishing a Law College in Tirunelveli. The University started functioning from “PONNUSAMY PILLAI BUNGALOW” which comes under the Government Department of Medical Education. Originally from Tamilnadu. From 1997 to 1998, this university was his T.N. Affiliation. Dr. Ambedkar College of Law, Chennai and his three-year law course (evening) was introduced in the same academic year. The college was inaugurated in October 2000 in its own building on a 15-acre plot adjacent to the district court building on the main Tiruchendur-Tuticorin road. In the academic year 1999-2000, as per the directions of the Bar Council of India, the three-year (evening) law course was abolished and from the year 2000, the five-year comprehensive law course was introduced. Ta. 2007 marked another milestone in the university's history with the launch of the Master's degree program in Constitutional Law and Human Rights.

LL.B (3 year course): Candidates must have completed graduation in one of the disciplines from an accredited university. There may be age restrictions, and candidates are usually required to be under a certain age at the time of admission (usually 30 years for the general category).
