Indian Maritime University was came into existence in by the Indian Maritime University Act 2008, on 14 November 2008. Its headquarters is at Chennai and has an All-India jurisdiction. Kolkata, Mumbai Port, Chennai, Kochi, Navi Mumbai, and Visakhapatnam are the 6 campuses of the university. Ranging from oceanography to maritime law and history it deals with a wide range of topics related to the sea.
Lies between East Coast Road and Old Mahabalipuram Road (Rajiv Gandhi Salai) there is a new HQ building is built at 300 acres land allotted to IMU at Semmancherry and Indian Maritime University is headquartered at Chennai. In Nautical Science, Ship Building & Repair, Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering, Marine Engineering, Maritime Management IMU presently offers Diploma, Degree, Postgraduate Diploma and Post Graduate Degree courses and Doctoral Programmes and Post Sea Courses.
