Wilson College was founded in 1832 by Scottish missionary Reverend John Wilson. It started as Ambroli's English School in Girgaum, Mumbai, and then changed location and name several times before finally being named Wilson School. The university division that became Wilson College was established in his 1836 year. Upon arriving in Mumbai in February 1829, Wilson and his wife Margaret began learning the local language, Marathi. Margaret established a school for girls in 1829 at Ambroli House in Girgaum, Mumbai, with Marathi as the main medium of teaching and learning. In 1832 a British boarding school was opened, later becoming St Her Columba School. Ambroli English School is the direct predecessor of today's university.
