Dr. Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya was established on 18th July 1946 formerly known as University of Saugor. University was established by Dr. Sir Hari Singh Gour by his lifetime saving. This is the oldest and the biggest University of Madhya Pradesh and 18th University of India. From 1922 to 1926 Dr. Hari Singh Gour was the first Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University. He was a great Patriot, Philanthropist, Educationist and Social Reformer apart from being a great jurist and legal luminary par excellence. He was also held Vice-Chancellor of the Nagpur University. By issuing a commemorative postage stamp in 1976 Govt. of India honored his memory. In February 1983 University was rechristened as Doctor Hari Singh Gour Vishwavidyalaya by the State Legislature. Oer Pathatiya Hills connected to the Vindhya Range its campus covers an area of 1312.89 acres, University is situated 5 Km. east of Sagar city. It is one of the finest picturesque campuses in India and has effectively contributed to the preservation and maintenance of ecosystem. Covering 6 revenue districts of M.P. it has 36 University teaching departments 9 faculties and 175 affiliated colleges. There are two hostels for girls and 4 hostels for boys.
