Periyar University PhD Admission 2025

The Government of Tamil Nadu established Periyar University in Salem on 17th September 1997 as per the provisions of the Periyar University Act, 1997. The University covers the area comprising four districts namely Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri. The University obtained 12(B) and 2(f) status from the University Grants Commission, New Delhi and it was re accredited by the NAAC with “A” Grade in 2015. The University secured 83rd rank among Indian Universities by MHRD NIRF 2020. The University is named after the Great Social Reformer E.V. Ramasamy, affectionately called as “Thanthai Periyar”. The University aims at developing knowledge in various fields to realize the maxim inscribed in the logo “Arival Vilayum Ulagu” (Wisdom Maketh the World). “Holistic development of the students” is the primary objective of the University. Periyar University imparts higher education through three modes: Departments of Study and Research, the affiliated Colleges, and Periyar Institute of Distance Education (PRIDE). The University has 27 departments and 113 affiliated colleges.

Eligibility Criteria

• For the purpose of admission to Ph.D., programme, a candidate should have obtained a Master Degree with not less than 55% of marks or an equivalent grade.
• For the candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC(Non-creamy layer)/Differently abled and those who have qualified for the Master’s degree before 19th September 1991 the minimum eligibility marks shall be 50% in their Master’s degree. 

Application Process

• Application can be submitted through online for both Full Time and Part Time Ph.D. Programmes during July and December sessions. Call for submission of application will be advertised in the news papers / University website during the month of May / October. A Common Entrance Test will be conducted for all the Ph.D applicants (FT, PT & teacher candidates) aspiring to join the University Departments and approved affiliated colleges/ institutions. No Ph.D Programme offered through the distance education mode.

Admission Procedure

Admission through the two stages:

• An Entrance Test consists of both written test and oral interview. Written test will be conducted for 40 marks and oral interview for 10 marks. Candidates securing 50% altogether shall be declared eligible for admission. Those candidates scored at least 15 marks in the written test will be called for oral interview.lottery sambad Rank list may be prepared based on entrance test (50%) and P.G. marks (50%).
• An interview to be organized to discuss their research interest / area through a presentation before a duly constituted Department Research Committee to cheek the candidate’s competence for the proposed research.

However, the candidates who qualify UGC-NET / UGCCSIR (NET) / SET / GATE / Teacher Fellowship holder/M.Phil. degree holder who have been admitted through common entrance test conducted at the University level (evidence of common entrance mark should be produced) are exempted from appearing written test but shall attend the interview conducted by the Department Research Committee.
