About University
The Court of Directors of the East India Company sent a despatch in July 1854 to the Governor-General of India in Council, recommending the foundation of the Universities of Calcutta, Madras, and Bombay. The University received in the primary case, the example of the University of London and steadily presented changes in its constitution.
The University of Calcutta had a huge regional ward during an extended time of its reality. This purview essentially proceeded till the Indian Universities Act of 1904 came into task, wherein arrangement was set aside a few minutes for characterizing the regional furthest reaches of the five University at that point existing in India (counting Burma and Ceylon), viz. the Universities of Calcutta, Bombay, Madras, the Punjab and Allahabad. Truth be told, there was no regional point of confinement fixed for the University of Calcutta in the Act of Incorporation in 1857, and when in 1882 the Punjab University and in 1887 the University of Allahabad appeared, no arrangement was made in the Acts for these Universities, shortening the purview of the University of Calcutta.
Under the Indian Universities Act of 1904, the Governor-General-in-Council was enabled to characterize the regional furthest reaches of the five colleges referenced above, and as per the notice of the Government of India, in the Home Department, dated 20 August 1904, the cutoff points of the University of Calcutta were restricted to Bengal (counting Bihar and Orissa), Assam and Burma.
